The home field didn’t help either of the Croatian clubs in Group E: after Mladost Zagreb’s and POSK Split’s in-house contest ended in an 8-8 tie on the opening day they were pushed to the losing trail by Posillipo Napoli (ITA) and BVSC Zuglo Budapest (HUN) respectively. POSK played a tighter match with the Hungarians on the closing day where the second qualifying spot was at stake, bounced back from 1-5 down to 6-7 but could never come to equal terms. BVSC won 13-11 as the Croats couldn’t score in the last three minutes. Posillipo finished atop with three convincing wins.

The other group lacked the excitements, by the end of the second day it was all over as – according to the expectations – host Canottieri Napoli (ITA) and FTC Budapest (HUN) both won their respective matches against Terrassa (ESP) and Pays d’Aix Natation (FRA), each with ease. The clash for the first place was a much more balanced encounter for three periods but after 6-6 the Hungarians had a 0-4 rush in a span of 3:02 minutes in the fourth, which decided the outcome (they won 7-10 in the end).

In the quarters, the advancing teams from this round will be drawn against the four losing sides coming from the Champions League qualifications.
