All of Europe has welcomed this great event that will take place in 2018 at the legendary Bernat Picornell Pool of Barcelona. Out of the 52 federations affiliated with the European Swimming League (LEN), 27 men’s and 20 women’s squads have entered the championships, including those automatically qualified from their results in the latest edition of the tournament, held in Belgrade.

The eight best teams from the latest championships were Serbia, Montenegro, Hungary, Croatia, Italy, Greece, Russia and Spain. In the women’s category, the privilege went to the six best squads: the Netherlands, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Russia and Spain. These standings automatically qualify them for Barcelona 2018.

Over the next few weeks, LEN will set up the competition groups for the first round of the qualifying stage that will take place from March 17-19 2017. This stage will be composed by groups of six and the best teams will go through the next stage, scheduled October 6-8 2017. The women’s pre-European championships will begin in October instead of March, considering fewer countries have registered.

The European Water Polo Champions Barcelona 2018 will be the biggest international water polo event of the season. The tournament will take place from July 14-28 2017 at the Bernat Picornell Pools. This will mark the first time the city hosts this competition, after the 1992 Olympic Games and the 2003 and 2013 World Aquatics Championships.
