Olympiacos Piraeus added the women’s Super Cup to its tally, winning three European trophies in two years: the Greeks clinched the LEN Trophy in 2014, the Euro League this spring and now the Super Cup. Euro Cup runner-up Plebiscito Padova (ITA) could keep up with the Greeks only in the first half of the final.
Back in the spring, Olympiacos became the second European club in history whose men’s and women’s side earned the top honours in continental water polo: Recco (ITA) achieved this feat earlier, while the female team of Olympiacos reached the top 13 years after the men’s triumph in the Champions League.
And now the Super Cup is also on its way to the Greek club’s treasury: the final in Athens saw a contest turning into a one-sided battle after one and a half periods. Italy’s Plebiscito Padova, runner-up in the Euro Cup (replacing winner Imperia which has faced hardship recently), tried to withstand the pressure in the final, staged in Athens, and led 2-3 after the first period.
But that was their last laugh – the following two periods brought Greek goals only and the hosts’ rush even lasted in the final period. Scoring seven unanswered goals, Olympiacos jumped from 2-3 to 9-3, while shutting out the Italians for 19:41 minutes. Alkisti Avramidou was the evening’s top scorer with 5 goals. Padova managed to find the back of the net in the last period three times, narrowing the gap towards the end, still, the Greek fans joyfully celebrated their heroes once more.
